:: Most Shocking Results Evah!

Well, I looked and looked all over the interweb to post a picture of Jordin Sparks having a mental breakdown last night after Ryan Seacrest and the rest of the genius American Idol writers and producers let her think for about 10 startling seconds that she was being eliminated. Maybe I will find a pic somewhere and update this post.

The show was intro'd by Seacrest saying "...the most shocking results ever..." were on tap for the 2-hour, star studded "Idol Gives Back" charity episode. Through the night, one by one, contestants were told they were safe until the end when Chris Richardson and Sparks were asked to stand. "Chris............(pregnant pause by Seacrest)......you are safe." Then after about 10 seconds of screams and camera shots of people in the audience looking really pissed off, Seacrest stated, "Jordin, you are also safe!"

How frickin mean was that? Jordin collapsed into the arms of her fellow contestants and began bawling. Who can blame her?

So next week, TWO contestants get the axe. I have been contemplating an American Idol post for quite some time...and it has been about 45 days since my last (shame shame shame!). So her are my top six predictions:

Bottom Two (will be let go next week): Lakisha Jones and Chris Richardson
Reasoning:
Lakisha has been getting, in my opinion, fatigued. I think it has been increasingly hard for her to be away from her child. Also, as has been pointed out by many pundits, she really has no technical music talent. A great voice can only get her so far in this competition, and this is that point. She needs to demonstrate some ability to make songs her own and work outside of the Kareoke box.

Chris is a talented singer...and I feel that he has really come far in the competition. After Simon scolded him for the "nasally" style he sings with last week, he came out this week with a very different, open sound. The voice coaches must have worked hard on him. However, Chris' downfall is trying to re-make Justin Timberlake. We have one already, we don't need another. Also, none of his performances are 'memorable'. Seeya, dude.

Number 4 - Phil Stacey
Reasoning:
I have wanted Phil gone for quite some time now. I had him pinned with Sanjaya as a spoiler, and up until the Country Week, he was doing a great job of spoiling. However, last week (Country week with Martina McBride), he really did go back to his roots. Quite frankly, its America's roots too...and he has the military, country, western, hillbilly, and older generations voting for him. He is no longer a spoiler, but a sleeper, much like Taylor Hicks last year. I give him 4th, but by a slim margin.

Number 3 - Melinda Doolittle
Reasoning:
Truth be told, she really should not be on Idol. She already is a professional. If you haven't been noticed by talent scouts yet, there is a reason...and it's not just because you have been stuck in the background. (Case in point - Hicks) Within the last two weeks, Simon and others called her out on making the "surprised" look when she gets kudos, and THANK GOD! Every freakin time she made that, "oooh! really? Mee!! I'm good!? WOW! I can't believe it, Thank YOOOO! kiss kiss" face. Yuck. To me, it was clearly insincere, and fakey. Her powerhouse voice, well developed stage presence, and overall 'likable' nature will get her to top three, but that is it.

Number 2 - Blake Lewis
Reasoning:
As Randy Jackson would say, "Tough call, Dog, ya know?" Blake is, by far, the most musically talented person in this season's competition. In fact, were it not for Chris Sligh's unwillingness to "play the game", I had Blake and Chris pinned for top two based on this alone. They both are accomplished in composing and arranging, and really having understanding of wht sounds good. The edge Lewis has, over everyone in the field, is his stage presence and his blend of modernization. Note that the beat boxing and slick dancing moves have bene absent the last few weeks. Watch for these elements to come back out of the box in the final weeks to make the girls at home cry (and vote). Unfortunately, this is American Idol - and Americans need their "storybook dreams come true" happy endings...so for my winner....

Winner - Jordin Sparks
Reasoning:
She is 17. She sings like she is 33. She looks like she is 27. But truly, she has amazing talent. My certainty on her ability to win this year was sewn up when she sang "You'll Never Walk Alone" - which is one of the most treasured, revered, and complex classic songs of generations she knows nothing of. With that song alone, she made the following generations weep: 1) Greatest Generationers - WWII vets and families who made that song their anthem when Carousel first came out, 2) Baby Boomers - who swooned over Sinatra, LaBelle, and Presley's versions, 3) GenX-ers who heard Olivia Newton John sing it, and were shouting it out at soccer (football) matches world wide as a stadium anthem, or who might have done the piece in theater class or choir or band back in their school days. The song is powerful, and for a 17-year old to sing every one of the only 71 words in the song with that kind of emotion takes extreme maturity and talent. Like I mentioned earlier, however...all talent aside, she is the storybook princess...the sweetheart...america will love her to the end.
