:: Idol Final Four

Tonight we saw our final four - Melinda, Blake, LaKisha, and Jordin - trying out songs written and/or produced by the legendary Barry Gibb. As summarized in almost every critque from the judges, this was a very weak night for the Idol contestants. Although Gibb's music - with and without his brothers in the Bee Gee's - is both epic and dynamic, the four kids let nerves get in the way of the potential of the music.

Here are my predictions for tomorrow night's results show:

Melinda - Synopsis: took on Inside and Out, a song which she was tentative about due to what she thought were sexual overtones in the song, and telling the USA Today that "her pastor was going to be there". She was corrected by the executive producer of Idol (its really just a simple love song), and went forward with a very "background singer" performance as noted by Simon Cowell. For her second number, she attempted How Can You Mend a Broken Heart in which she purposely dodged the lyrics "How can a loser ever win?". (Gibb even said he didn't blame her for doing so). The performance was stronger, but still, she is just a pro-circuit background singer looking for a chance on what is supposed to be an amatuer talent show. She just doesn't belong, and she is precarious after these performances. Prediction - bottom two, 70% chance of being voted off.

Blake - Synopsis: Came into tonights show ultra-confident on keeping the modern tact on his music. Last week's performance was stellar, but when he adapted You Should Be Dancing to his beat-boxing style, it came off like harmful interference. He then tackled the obscure Danger Zone with which Gibb was impressed would finally be a hit record under Blake's styling. However, the obscuity of the song was Blake's saving grace -- because nobody knew it, it was original to him and the contest, and he will remain popular as a result. Prediction - top two. 20% chance of bottom two standing.

LaKisha - Synopsis: Solid and steady...but not spectacular. She picked Stayin Alive as her first turn. She took the tempo down, much to the dismay of the audience who was ready to boogie...however the slow tempo, and staccato tone of the delivery made the classic disco song drag. LaKisha's second choice was Run to Me, and while she delivered a more convincing performance, it was still very un-special. As noted in my previous post - LaKisha, while appreciable, is very forgettable as she lacks true talent as it comes to technique and skill. Prediction - bottom two, 50% chance of getting voted off. Edging Melinda due to her underdog popularity.

Jordin - Synopsis: The phenom 17-yr old continued to tackle the classic, meaningful songs that people wanted to hear. You Don't Know What It's Like was a straight delivery, but with her own diva styling. I Am a Woman In Love was a huge challenge for Jordin, and ended up "pitchy" as judge Randy Jackson pointed out. But, as Jordin ended on a dear classic, and a mature favorite, she will also retain the top votes. Prediction - top two. Safe, no hedging this bet!
